A brief description (with trophy photos) of current EGC competitions at ESTEC and on ‘outside courses’, and Competitions played in recent past years.
The ‘In short’ gives an overview of seasons of play, format, handicap limitations, starting method, après golf event. Dates & Details per event can be found in the yearly Calendar.


The Monthly

(Individual)

he EGC Monthly Competition is held every month – normally on the first Sunday of the month. All members of the EGC are eligible to play.

Players in Category 1 play a strokeplay competition. Players in Category 2 play a Stableford competition.

For the purposes of the competition, the maximum number of ‘Strokes Received’ shall correspond to an Exact Handicap of 36.0.(the rule of 36)

Each month, prizes for the top 4 scores in Cat.1 & Cat.2 are presented.

Four trophies are available at years end – Ebbesen, Lindsley, RHS, Tomaselli.

Presentation tournament

(Individual)

This is usually held on the last Saturday of January and is open to all Club members. It is played ‘against Par’ with handicap adjustment. It is followed in the evening by a dinner at which the previous year’s trophies are presented.

Pea Soup tournament

(Individual)

This is a strokeplay tournament, with full handicap adjustment, for those with an Exact Handicap of 45 or lower, played in late February. Afterwards we gather for erwtensoep, rookworst etc.

Club Matchplay Competition

(Individual)

This is a knockout matchplay competition and is open to all Club members with an Exact Handicap of 36.0 or lower. The maximum difference between the 2 players in a match is 18 strokes (so max 1 stroke given per hole)

The draw is made in March and matches are played throughout the season with deadlines for the completion of each round.

The Colin Rolls’ Trophy

(Team)

This is a four-leg (greensome, scramble, better ball, foursome) team competition held between April and July. The Competition is named after its founder and long standing club member Colin Rolls. Any Club member is entitled to set him/herself up as a team captain and to recruit team members, usually with some loose sort of theme. Currently (2024) there are four teams (the Andy Caps, the Babes and Boys, Friday’s Men and the Mulligans). Nominally a team submits any number of flights of 2 golfers per leg with the scores of the best 2 flights making the team score. Players can participate in the rounds that they wish but the main purpose of the competition is to have fun.

Seasonals

(Individual)

Four Stableford competitions on external courses normally within ~1hour driving distance from ESTEC with a dinner afterwards…
Nominally Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, with a trophy & prizes for each (The winter event trophy is the Niblic).
The maximum number of ‘Strokes Received’ shall correspond to an Exact Handicap of 36.0.
The overall winner of the Seasonals (the winner of the Granny Smith trophy) is the player with the highest aggregate Stableford score over 3 of the 4 rounds.

Socials

(Team)

These are held several times during the season. They are meant to be fun, with the aim of welcoming those players with little or no experience of (competitive) golf and with high handicaps. The format, usually some form of scramble, is chosen to be very forgiving and allows beginners to win prizes.

The Bedrijfs League

(Team)

These are held several times during the season. They are meant to be fun, with the aim of welcoming those players with little or no experience of (competitive) golf and with high handicaps. The format, usually some form of scramble, is chosen to be very forgiving and allows beginners to win prizes.

The Chatuverdi Veteran’s Trophy

(Individual)

Initiated in 2013, this competition is for “veteran” members (≥ 60 years) partners/spouses of veterans (even if not of qualifying age) are welcome to participate
Medal strokeplay competition over 2 x 18 holes played during June at ESTEC. (Handicap unchanged between rounds)
An evening dinner and presentation of the trophy takes place after the second round.

The Walker cup

(Individual)

The Walker Cup, the Cat. 2 Championship, is for Category 2 players (i.e. with a handicap currently of > 22.0) and is an 18 hole Stableford competition. Members with lower handicaps are invited to participate on the day.

Captain’s Day

The Club Captain and Lady Captain host separate Individual Stableford competitions for men and ladies respectively, held on the same day.

Captain’s Challenge

(Individual)

Each year, the Club Captain invites former captains and lady captains (and guests) to participate in a Stableford competition played on an outside course followed by a dinner.

The Club Championship and the Medal Strokeplay Trophy

The Club Championship is played over both days of a weekend. It is open to all club members with a handicap of 36.0 or lower. All participants play from the yellow tees
The first 18 holes, played on Saturday, determine the best 27 players, who go through to the final 36 holes, played on the Sunday
The format for the Club Championship is strokeplay, without handicap adjustment. The winner is the player with the lowest gross score over the 54 holes. If necessary there is a sudden-death playoff. There is also a trophy for the best lady player – The “Nely Borst Trophy”

The winner of the medal strokeplay trophy is the player with the lowest nett score (i.e. with handicap adjustment) over the 54 holes in the Club Championship.
In the event of a tie the winner will be determined by the count-back method.
The playing handicap remains the same across the three rounds.

3 Club Competition

(Individual and Team)

Individual and team (CRT) Stableford with only 3 clubs in the bag (the putter is a club).
Teams are arranged to have approximately equal number of players. Nearies on every hole count towards the team score.

Chairman’s challenge

(Team)

This is a pairs better ball, stableford competition.
The par for the course is set by the Chairman and Captain. The par for each hole is only revealed after the competition play has been completed.
The event is sometimes known as the ‘Hares and the Hounds’.

“challenges” against local clubs

(Team)

Challenges are arranged at various times against local clubs (such as Vijf Margen, Kagerzoom, etc)
These are opportunities to allow members of other clubs in the area to play at ESTEC, and in return we visit the club to play on their course. The intention is to foster links with the other clubs.
Format is generally Individual Stableford, with the best 3 scores for each team, on each of the 2 days being totalled to determine the winning team.
